THIEVES LEAVE BITTER TASTE AT WW1 APOTHECARY GARDEN

Herbs stolen from the World War One Memorial Garden

Earlier this year, restoration of the 100-year-old WW1 memorial in Lowther Gardens was undertaken by Lytham in Bloom to create a specially-themed Apothecary Garden. Unfortunately some of the plants have been stolen.

The memorial dated back to the end of World War One, when it was presented by injured soldiers to the nurses who had cared for them during the Great War. Star Hills Nursing Home operated as a V.A.D. Hospital during both wars as injured soldiers returning from combat received medical attention there. As a gesture of their gratitude, the soldiers commissioned the monument in honour of those nurses.

During the time of WW1 herbs were often used as medicinal aids to recovery. With this in mind, a selection of beneficial herbs was planted in the garden surrounding the monument as an Apothecary Garden was established in remembrance of the soldiers and nurses. Tended by Lytham in Bloom volunteers, and sponsored by Lytham St Annes Skip Hire, the herbs were chosen, planted , watered and weeded through the dry period and have now fully established themselves.

The Monument and Herb Garden have been included in tours of the local area organised for children by Fylde Rangers over the summer months. They are also incorporated into school visits as children learn both about WW1 and the benefit of herbs.

Sadly, this is not the first time plants have gone missing in Lowther Gardens. This year, carefully selected blooms were stolen from the Lytham in Bloom woodland border on more than one occasion. Plants waiting to be used in the formal beds have also been stolen before they were even planted.

These events are sad enough, but stealing from a WW1 Monument and Apothecary Garden reaches a new low. The plants were clearly targeted and stolen with care. Whoever did this must be completely heartless. They seem not to care about those soldiers and nurses who battled on their behalf to assure them of their freedom. This is no way of repaying that sacrifice.
